The Cape Town Carnival is an annual project that fosters local participation in arts and culture. By bringing together some of the best performers and artists, the Carnival showcases creativity, encouraging celebration, whilst boosting tourism. Beyond the event itself, the Carnival creates jobs, develops skills, builds networks, and gives a voice and visibility to a diverse array of communities.

BACKGROUND

With a profound passion for community and the creative arts, RedZebra's involvement in the carnival is a match made in heaven. Africa is globally recognized as a continent of Drums, Dance, and Rhythm! The Cape Town Carnival has evolved with a long-term vision: "To create a Carnival that showcases and celebrates the diversity of South Africa, putting the carnival on the international tourism calendar.

BRIEF

Our task is to support the development of a World-class African Carnival, emphasizing the rhythm and musical aspects.

By facilitating community participation and ownership of the carnival's music and rhythm – the heartbeat that draws people back year after year – we provided the necessary Musical Direction, training, and facilitative skills to enhance and support the creative process, fostering community participation in arts and culture.

We strive towards a World-Class African Carnival, enhancing Africa's reputation for Drums, rhythm, and dance. We collaborate with local communities to cultivate group pride and ownership of the Carnival Voice, while contributing to the realization of the long-term vision.

Solution

Between 2013 and 2016, RedZebra developed and implemented the concept of monthly BBTs, also known as Big Beat Training, to regularly bring all community leaders together. This creative platform facilitated the co-creation of the overall theme with a holistic approach to skill development. These skills empowered the carnival to resonate with community spirit, breathing life into the event.

RESULT

The Cape Town Carnival has played a significant role in uniting the city of Cape Town by providing opportunities for community participation in arts and culture. It has become a significant hub for the clothing, costume, and set-building industries in the Western Cape. The Carnival has created numerous employment and training opportunities in costume and float design, production, and large event logistics. Additionally, it fosters an environment of social cohesion where tourists and locals can experience the glamour and creativity of the Cape Town Carnival throughout the year.
